LIGONDE – BOENTE

We watched an episode of the Chosen at the Hostel it was part of the expectation of staying there. I guess they are aiming to reach out to people who don’t know Jesus. It was an episode from season 1 and it was really good they even provided us with pop-corn which was nice. After the episode had finished we were able to setup our beds that we had to go and collect from the shed. Ray and I had an old school wire stretcher and Bryce and Rory had a slightly better slat version. We had an hour till dinner and we all hung out on the beds and had a bit of snooze.

Then we woke up for dinner which was outside on picnic tables pushed together. As I said yesterday the hostel was being run by a group from the UK for the week and they were lovely. There was a guy who was originally from Iran cooked dinner so it had a Persian theme. There were 3 different kinds of meat and rice and salads as well as Padron Peppers it was a feast. Ray was full which was impressive he had thirds, then for dessert it was fresh fruit salad and cheese cake and then they brought out a peach cake which was left over from the day before. It was fair to say that we were all a little full. After dinner they ad a discussion where they had photos and they asked you to choose one and speak about why you were doing the Camino. And then talk about your views on spirituality, I got to share about Fiona and how God has been speaking to me on the Camino. Rory shared about how they had asked me to pray each morning and how special that was as well.

It was a late night for me we went to bed at almost 10:00pm, just as we were going to bed there was a big thunder storm and it started to pour with rain. I prayed that it would be dry when we woke up in the morning. The other compeed came off my foot as well and while it smelt pretty funky and looked a bit freaky i think it was good. I removed a little bit of suspect looking flesh and then left it to dry out over night. We headed off to bed, they said that they would be setting up the breakfast and leaving it on the table for those in the morning. We made our donation for the stay and then went to bed. We had managed to score a fan for the room as it was a bit stuffy, apart from people coming and going to a bathroom and leaving a light on it was a pretty good sleep. Although my bed was somewhat banana like. Which meant that I had a bit of a sore back in the morning.

We woke at 5:30am this morning although I woke just after 5:00am got up sorted our stuff had a little breakfast and then prayed and got on the road. It was very dark when we headed off and made some really good progress. We stopped at Palas de Rei for breakfast and then had another 20km to go for the day, we stopped at Melide for a drink and then pushed on to get to our Albergue in Boente. It was a pretty good walk today but my feet were a bit sore and I am still getting used to the volume of extra pilgrims. This isn’t great when you come to get some breakfast as there are swarms of people trying to get ready to start their day at about 10:00am and you have already been walking for 3:30hours and they want their muffin and freshly squeezed OJ.

Our accomodation in Boente is lovely it is a 40 bed hostel with a lovely bar and it even has little swimming pool. We had a burgers for lunch and will look at having more food later for dinner where they have a pilgrims menu. We saw Lia the Maori woman from Nelson who I meet on Day one we have seen her a bit on the way. She came in and had a water and told us that she had rolled her ankle while walking today so I offered to pray for her and we sent her on her way to get to her accomodation for the evening, a few kms away.

As of today we have 47.2kms to go to Santiago we have walked 719kms tomorrow we will walk about 27 kms so that we only have 20kms to go on Wednesday into Santiago it is hard to believe that we are just about there. My feet are still a bit sore but nothing like they have been even though they look munted. I am sure that they will heal up properly when I stop walking on them.

Anyway that is it for me, I hope you are well!

Nga mihi

Mike

Wow, the end is so close! What an epic effort. Thank you for sharing your camino with us, it’s beautiful the way you’ve honoured Fiona throughout the journey who we all still miss. We’re also so happy to be soon welcoming Yona and her children to our whānau 🙂
